I think AI tools will get better and better at solving very small problems, and I predict programming will expand to something that way more people do, most without ever learning a computer programming language.
Over the next few years, I see more and more people able to solve everyday problems by building quick, even one-off solutions with natural language prompts.
What I don’t see happening are these tools being able to build the kind of complex software systems the world runs on. Not for way longer than 10 years, anyway. Dramatically improving productivity? Yes. Killing some jobs? Probably.
But hey, who knows?
Edit: I should add, I think a growing number of tools for existing programmers to start interacting with their code in natural language will begin to emerge, too. I think there will be a wave of coders over the next few years who code in existing languages but rarely touch their keyboard.
